Delving into Reading


Benefits of Reading

Travelling, watching movies, reading and writing are some of my favorite activities. Taking my mind to places where my physical body has not been, is what reading does for me.  Reading allows me to explore places beyond my physical boundaries. I can visit the chilly Chicago Navy Pier, and swim with the Dolphins by the Shedd Aquarium. I have flown kites on the roof in Afghanistan with Omar in ‘A Fort of Nine Towers’, have my heart melt in ‘Lord of Scoundrels’ and fallen in love in ‘Crispen Points’. That is the mesmerizing power of written words.

Reading not only stimulates your mind and keeps it active, but in a study of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences they found that older people who read regularly were two and a half times less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s or Dementia. While reading a well written book, it is not unusual for me to try to figure out the plot and analyze each situation to see if I will arrive at the conclusion that the writer intends. That is for me one of the joys of reading; it provokes the mind and turns me on to issues I may not have necessarily been exposed to.

As a writing enthusiast, I not only enjoy reading because of the entertainment factor, albeit a rather inexpensive one at times, but also because it challenges me to be more, grasp opportunities and be the best me possible. Depending on the genre, I may get overwhelmed with emotions of excitement, breathless anticipation or blinding rage. So not only do I garner new information, improve my vocabulary and writing skills, but as the saying goes ‘use it or lose it’ reading also exercises and relaxes my mind.
